There is more than one way to catch trout but let’s take a look at how you might enjoy a guided trout fishing day in the Scottish Highlands.
Our native brown trout are beautiful, tough, fast and wily and they will test your skill and your reactions. They are found in rivers and lochs (Scottish lakes) and feed mostly on insects but sometimes on smaller fish too.
Our challenge is to imitate what we think the trout might be feeding on and that can very from day to day and even hour to hour. Luckily I have a few thousand flies to choose from and nearly sixty years experience of choosing flies. Even then, it can still be tough when they are being picky!
If we are out in a boat there will be either one or maybe two of you fishing with myself or one of our guides keeping the boat in position, advising, coaching and probably netting fish. You will often be casting short lines in front of you with the wind on our backs as we drift downwind and able to see the fish take your fly just in front of you.
We have some great days with sometimes 50 fish or more landed. They are often quite small but on light tackle you will feel all the fight right up to the net. Feel free to take some back to cook up – delicious.
This kind of fishing is perfect for total beginners and experienced fly fishermen (and ladies) alike. I’ve had dozens of people from age 6 to 80 catch their first fish on one of these days.
The locations we go to for boat fishing in lochs vary from small sheltered lochs to big waters like Loch Ness, always very beautiful Highland places though. It’s a fantastic day out that people never forget. Stopping for lunch on some remote shore, making a wee fire to brew up tea or coffee.
There are quite a few lochs I know of where there is a good hatch of Mayfly in late May and June and this can be very exciting with trout eager for a few big mouthfuls. Some of the bigger lochs have some very big wild brown trout and a few of these monsters are caught every year.
We do have river fishing for brown trout too but the peaty and nutrient-poor waters here in the Highlands means that we have less plant growth and insect life therefore smaller and fewer trout than the richer waters further south.
Still, there are a few places worth going especially in April when fish are still hungry and we get hatches of flies like Dark Olives and March Browns. What we don’t have in Scotland is float trips like there are in some of the bigger trout rivers in North America.
While we are talking about boat fishing, we regularly fish a great loch for big rainbow trout. Many of them are over 10lb and the biggest one of our guests had last year was about 20lb – I could barely get it in the net. Strong tackle is needed with rods of #7-9 and leaders of 10-12lb.
Most of the rainbow trout fishing we do is in smaller fisheries where the fish are still big and powerful but more likely to average 2-3 lb. There are facilities like toilets and huts or cabins for teamaking, lunch or shelter. A trip like this can be one person or groups up to 20 and makes a great team building event or family outing. Realistically, I would say 6 years old is a minimum age and that is to with strength to hold and cast a fly rod plus attention span.
Our guides are not only skilled anglers but also enthusiastic teachers. They’ll show you how to cast, explain salmon behavior, and help you build new skills.
